Finding Inspiration

by Scott on February 14, 2012

Today I kept wracking my mind on what it was that I wanted to blog about. Seeing today as an opportune time to be inspired to write. Even though the sun is out and quite vibrant there is yet a morning chill here in Tracy California. The temperatures will eventually climb to break 60 degrees and not just encourage, but almost beckon me back out to work among the garden. I can truly feel the pull right now to prep the garden for the spring that is already upon us.

Already the weather and people around have begun to inspire me to create a garden full of grandeur and luscious production. So as I sit here stumped on what to write about, it dawns on me. What has inspired me down this road to be inspired today. There are several factors and I will only touch upon the few that have really held weight in leading me to where I am today.

Like any good book I suppose it is best that I start at the beginning, and in the beginning there was no desire. No plan, just a direction. I knew I wanted to escape to my own property, but I had envisioned a cabin in the woods separated from society to live in quiet solitude. I had no plan on how to feed myself or with what.

As I began my trek for my 20 year plan I grew closer to my father speaking almost every day as I looked for a job and what would continue even after I found employment in a down economy. He had mentioned planting some citrus trees for whatever reason he has. As a dutiful son I happily volunteered my labor to help plant the orchard for him. As the years progressed so did our plans. from just giving a helping hand to being an integral part of building a sustainable homestead with my father to leave a family legacy. On his recommendation I watched Food, Inc. and that is where the path that I have followed truly began. What started from reading ingredients and choosing organics and in-season produce evolved into experimenting with a garden.

I became a vocal fan of Growing a Greener World, and followed Joe Lamp’l closely. After receiving his book autographed from a contest win I was moving further along my path. I felt the passion within growing as I wanted to build and grow sustainable landscapes for people. Not just lawns and privacy bushes, I wanted edible landscapes lining our yards and fences.

From this I was introduced to Rosalind Creasy’s book Edible Landscaping and soon fell in love with the idea of providing edible landscapes for people in my town and around my area. What began as an inkling of experimentation had grown into a full blown passion, and I wanted to share it with the world.

From this inkling began my goal of starting my own edible landscaping company. I had a lot of research to do and coming up with the start-up capital. Around this time I was introduced to the person who has inspired me the most. I am thankful every day that she speaks to me and says the most insightful words to inspire me. I would not be this close to my dream without her, and am grateful every day to have my sweetheart in my life. Seeing her passion inspires me greatly and I cherish the moments when it breaks through and shows itself to me.

To PVC or Not to PVC

by Scott on February 10, 2012

So I keep thinking lately what are going to be my experiements this year? I have so many new ideas and quite a few of them are either taken from Pinterest or encouraged from my girlfriend. One that is definitely on the to-do list is going to be a PVC pipe garden. Because of where I am our backyard only gets a certain amount of sunlight that only hits the top portion of our fence. Seeing this as a resource i wish to tap into I came across this idea to use 4″ PVC pipe filled with soil and holes drilled to use as a planter.

Seeing as the Spring season is about to be here my timeline is moving up and I need to get on that project! Not having these materials already on hand I had to do some research on how much this would be. I would of course need the PVC Pipe, and some canvas for the ends. While it was not required I wanted to get a hole saw bit. I began to look for these items online so I could get an idea on what cost I was looking at. Soon after I saw that it would be prohibitive to do.

Looking for some type of close alternative I (and by that I mean She Who Shall Be Obeyed), came up with the idea to use rain gutters. Finding one with the same length and depth I was looking for, but for a quarter of the price of the PVC pipe, I now have an altered plan for some planters. Now I just need to go out and get the materials I will need for this experiment and I will be sure to document my progress! Until then take a look over at www.pvcplans.com for a look at the directions of their PVC Pipe Garden.

A Taste for Lavender

February 1, 2012

Lately I have yearned for another wonderful meal prepared with Lavender. You should all recognize this wonderful aromatic herb. So common as an aromatic yet so neglected as a tasteful spice. I was one of the many who never thought to cook with this herb before. I would like to share my opinions [...]
